Spring/Summer 2023 Editor’s Letter: Introducing the Silo in the Square

As an editor of a wedding magazine for nearly 20 years, I’ve seen trends come and go and come back again. I’m talking about you, puffy sleeves and pearls. But one thing I’ve always felt is that Morgantown needed a few more wedding venue options. I’ve dreamed of creating an event space that was interesting and intimate. I can now check that item off my bucket list. Meet The Silo in the Square!

The Silo in the Square is located in Granville, right across the river from the WVU Coliseum and only one mile from Interstate 79. It has been a fun, albeit sometimes arduous, task crafting this unique venue space. My husband and I purchased the buildings a few months before the world shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, so right out of the gate we faced many delays and unforeseen challenges. We changed course a couple of times, opting to create a space for small gatherings, ideally under 75 people. We took two industrial warehouses and connected them with a silo that we sourced from Scott Frederick. Although we call one building the Chapel and the other the Barn, they really are multipurpose spaces that open onto a courtyard, perfect for outdoor evening events. Folks who visit love the space—and I love that we are able to provide an affordable option not just for weddings, but also bridal parties, baby showers, rehearsal dinners, and birthday parties.

I have a newfound appreciation for wedding venues and all the parts and pieces that make them perfect backdrops for special occasions. In this issue, you’ll see some dreamy ones, from vineyards to barns to ballrooms. The venue you choose needs to reflect who you are and the feeling you want your guests to experience. I recently gave a tour of The Silo to a woman who was planning for a second marriage. She said that her soon-to-be husband was a “blue jeans and flannel shirt” guy who didn’t like a lot of fuss. She didn’t want to invite many people, mostly family, but she was really concerned about making sure her fiancé was comfortable. I suggested to her, if he likes flannel shirts and blue jeans, then have your guests all wear plaid flannel shirts and denim. Take it and make it your theme. Fun, right?

I can’t believe it, but it’s time to vote for the Best of WV Weddings 2023! In June, vote for your favorite wedding vendor—from photographers to venues to florists. I can’t stress enough how important it is to show your love by taking time to vote. This award is more than just a pat on the back—it also encourages wedding businesses to market themselves, and, if they win, it is a valuable stamp of approval. This year, we are only doing one round of voting, and the winners will be announced in our Fall/Winter issue. You can vote once a day until June 21.

As we close in on 15 years as a company, I’d like to thank all the couples who have shared their beautiful days in the pages of WV Weddings and all of our advertisers who have helped make this magazine the state’s bridal bible. We are grateful for you and proud to be a part of your story!

Make it eventful,

Nikki Bowman Mills, Editor
