Beckley native Kristen and Elkins native Nigel met at West Virginia University’s College of Law in 2011. However, sparks didn’t fly until they bumped into each other in the basement of the Cabell County Courthouse, where both worked as freshly graduated lawyers. Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio holds cherished memories for the couple. Not only is it the site of their first out-of-state trip and first photo together, but it was also where Nigel proposed. They stood beside a rolling waterfall in January air, but neither felt the cold the moment Nigel got down on one knee and asked Kristen to marry him. Their small outdoor wedding took place at Spruce Island Lake.
It was a quiet ceremony, no music or background noise—just the couple and their families. Kristen was escorted down to the side of the lake by her father, where her soon-to-be husband stood with their newly ordained friend from law school. She wore a champagne-colored 1920s-style silk dress with lace sleeves, her great-grandmother’s floral broach in her hair and an arrangement of late-summer wildflowers in hand. Nigel was in a navy blue three-piece suit with a pocket square made of fabric from Kristen’s dress, a romantic touch.
They moved inside for the reception, where all enjoyed a classic Italian meal and homemade pies. After toasts from family members, the couple cut into a three-tiered cake decorated with fresh berries and flowers. Guests ate and drank, mingling in the relaxed atmosphere. Kristen and Nigel ended the evening by opening a few gifts from their family. While awaiting the opportunity to finally take their honeymoon, Kristen works as a writ clerk for the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia, and Nigel works as the Calhoun County Prosecutor.
